A feature of the Pirelli Carlisle Rally has always been the appearance of the British Armed Forces Rally Team and their distinctive white Land Rovers which they drive with considerable panache and gusto, delighting the spectators as they hurl these massive, 2 tonne, monsters through the forest stages, the vehicles adopting some gravity defying angles as they negotiate the undulating gravel tracks. For some time now the team has been led by the flamboyant Major Alan Paramore whose enthusiastic and forceful driving style has produced some extraordinary results, even recording a “Fastest in Class” at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Sadly, it looked as though 2015 would see the absence of the dashing Major as he is now Major (Retired) Paramore, however, with the Pirelli Carlisle event coming up, the team found themselves short of a driver when one of their number was packed off on an unexpected deployment, a hazard of military life. With a replacement required, Major Paramore eagerly answered the call to arms and promptly “Re-enlisted” and he will once again be tearing up the tracks in the Kielder Forest Complex, no doubt as fast and spectacular as ever. Officially he is nominated as a “Guest” driver but you can bet that he will be leading from the front, as always, and showing the new recruits how it should be done. The British Armed Forces Rally Team will be competing, alongside a field of over 100 cars, the Pirelli Carlisle Rally starts with a 09:00 am ceremonial send off from Carlisle city centre before heading for the special stages in the Kielder Forest complex.
